The pale inner bulk of each hemisphere under the cortex, made of insulated nerve fibres.
What it does
Wires cortical areas to each other, to the other hemisphere and down to the brainstem and spinal cord.
Keeping it well
Damaged by multiple sclerosis, small-vessel disease from high blood pressure, and injury. Bright spots show on MRI.
