Tuber cinereum

Tuber cinereum · Šedý hrbol

Nervous system

Looks like

A small grey bulge on the underside of the hypothalamus, between the optic chiasm and the mammillary bodies; the pituitary stalk hangs from it.

What it does

Holds nuclei that control hormone release by the pituitary, plus appetite and body temperature.

Keeping it well

A benign growth here (hypothalamic hamartoma) can cause laughing seizures or early puberty. Surgeons open its floor to drain fluid.
