Pre-hepatic portal vein
Pars praehepatica venae portae · Předjaterní část vrátnicové žíly
Veins
Looks like
The main portal vein trunk, about 8 cm long, from behind the pancreas up to the liver entrance, behind the bile duct.
What it does
Carries blood from the stomach, bowel, pancreas and spleen to the liver, which cleans and processes it.
Keeping it well
In cirrhosis pressure rises (portal hypertension), causing varices and fluid in the belly. Vomiting blood is an emergency.
