Nervous system
Looks like
A thin sheet of grey matter forming the front wall of the third ventricle, above the optic chiasm.
What it does
Contains sensors that detect salt levels in the blood and help trigger thirst and water balance.
Keeping it well
Surgeons can open it to drain fluid in hydrocephalus or reach tumours; otherwise it matters mainly as a landmark.
