Superior mesenteric vein
Vena mesenterica superior · Horní okružní žíla
Veins
Looks like
A large vein running up in the root of the small-bowel mesentery, to the right of its artery, behind the pancreas neck.
What it does
Drains the small bowel, the right colon and the pancreas head, joining the splenic vein to form the portal vein.
Keeping it well
Its involvement decides whether pancreatic cancer can be removed. A clot here causes severe belly pain — emergency.
