Nervous system
Looks like
A thin sheet of grey matter tucked between the insula and the putamen, separated from each by a band of white matter.
What it does
Has two-way connections with almost every area of the cortex; thought to help coordinate attention across the senses, but its exact job is still unknown.
Keeping it well
Rarely damaged on its own. Changes in it are reported after some seizures and autoimmune encephalitis; claims that it is the 'seat of consciousness' rest on one case and remain unproven.
