Epidural space
Spatium epidurale · Epidurální prostor
Nervous system
Looks like
The space between the spinal dura and the bone and ligaments of the canal, filled with fat and a web of veins; in the skull there is none until bleeding creates one.
What it does
Cushions the cord and lets the spine bend; it is where an epidural anaesthetic or steroid injection is placed to numb nerve roots.
Keeping it well
An epidural abscess (fever, back pain, then weakness) or bleed can crush the cord and needs emergency surgery. In the skull, a torn artery after a blow to the temple makes an extradural haematoma — lucid, then rapidly unconscious.
