Subthalamic nucleus
Nucleus subthalamicus · Subtalamické jádro
Nervous system
Looks like
A small lens-shaped nucleus below the thalamus, deep in the centre of the brain.
What it does
Drives the brake of the basal ganglia to stop unwanted movement.
Keeping it well
The usual target for deep brain stimulation in advanced Parkinson's disease; damage here causes violent flinging of one arm (hemiballismus).
