Right parahippocampal gyrus
Gyrus parahippocampalis dexter · Pravý parahipokampální závit
Nervous system
Looks like
A ridge on the inner underside of the temporal lobe, running alongside the hippocampus; its front hook is the uncus.
What it does
Feeds information into the hippocampus; key for memory of places and scenes (entorhinal cortex sits here).
Keeping it well
One of the first areas hit by Alzheimer disease. When the brain swells, the uncus can herniate and press the midbrain — an emergency.
