The lower segment of the lingula (S5), at the front lower edge of the left upper lobe above the heart's apex.
What it does
Gas exchange in the lowest part of the left upper lobe.
Keeping it well
Mainly a landmark; the lingula can be removed on its own (lingulectomy) for small tumours or localised bronchiectasis.
