The topmost ridge of the frontal lobe, running front to back along the midline beside the groove between the two halves of the brain.

What it does

Takes part in planning, working memory and self-control; its back part helps start and sequence movements.

Keeping it well

Damaged by stroke, tumour or head injury; it can cause apathy or loss of drive. Sudden personality change needs a doctor.
