Lateral & medial geniculate bodies
Corpora geniculata · Kolénková tělesa
Nervous system
Looks like
Two small bumps on the underside of the back of each thalamus: the lateral one for sight, the medial one for hearing.
What it does
The lateral body passes signals from the optic tract to the visual cortex; the medial body passes signals from the inferior colliculus to the hearing cortex.
Keeping it well
A stroke or tumour here causes loss of the same half of the visual field in both eyes. Hearing loss from one side is rare because each ear reaches both sides of the brain.
