Inferior olive

Oliva inferior · Dolní oliva

Nervous system

Looks like

An olive-shaped bulge on each side of the front of the medulla, holding a folded ribbon of grey matter (the inferior olivary nucleus).

What it does

Sends climbing fibres to the opposite half of the cerebellum, each wrapping one Purkinje cell; they signal errors, so the cerebellum can learn and time movements.

Keeping it well

A stroke in the brainstem can make it swell and fire rhythmically (hypertrophic olivary degeneration), causing a palatal tremor with clicking in the ear and a shaking gaze.
