A group of nerve cells on the floor of the midbrain, beside the substantia nigra.

What it does

Sends dopamine forward to the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex: the signal that marks something as worth wanting, learning and repeating.

Keeping it well

Alcohol, nicotine, opioids, stimulants and gambling all hijack this reward pathway, which is why addiction is a learning problem as much as a chemical one. Low drive in depression and the 'negative' symptoms of schizophrenia involve it too.
