A thin strip of cortex around a deep groove on the inner face of each occipital lobe.
What it does
The first cortical stop for vision, mapping the opposite half of the visual field.
Keeping it well
Damaged by stroke or injury; migraine aura of zigzag lights starts here and is usually harmless, but a new pattern needs assessment.
