The lower pair of the four bumps on the back of the midbrain.
What it does
Almost every hearing pathway passes through here; it works out where a sound comes from and sends it on to the medial geniculate body.
Keeping it well
Tumours of the pineal region or midbrain can press on it. Tested indirectly by the auditory brainstem response in newborn hearing screens.
