One of three pocket-shaped cusps at the root of the aorta; the coronary arteries open from the bulges behind two of them.
What it does
Seals the aortic opening after each beat.
Keeping it well
About 1–2% of people have a two-cusp aortic valve that wears out early; it is followed with ultrasound.
