Yellow marrow
Medulla ossium flava · Žlutá kostní dřeň
Subcutaneous fat
Looks like
Fatty, yellow tissue filling the hollow shafts of the long bones, taking over from red marrow through childhood.
What it does
Stores fat and can turn back into red marrow if the body needs more blood.
Keeping it well
Fat from it can enter the blood after a long-bone fracture (fat embolism), causing breathlessness and confusion days later.
