Juxtaglomerular apparatus
Complexus juxtaglomerularis · Juxtaglomerulární aparát
Endocrine glands
Looks like
A microscopic contact point where the distal tubule touches the arteriole feeding its own glomerulus.
What it does
Senses blood pressure and salt and releases renin to raise them when low.
Keeping it well
ACE inhibitors and similar drugs block the system it starts; narrowing of a renal artery overdrives it and causes hard-to-treat high blood pressure.
