Kidneys
Ren (nephros) · Ledviny
Urinary system
Looks like
A pair of dark-red beans the size of a fist, tucked high against the back wall behind the gut.
What it does
Filters the blood, makes urine, and sets blood pressure, salt and red-cell production.
Keeping it well
Blood pressure and sugar in range. Anti-inflammatory painkillers taken daily for years damage kidneys; short courses rarely do, except with dehydration, kidney disease or some blood-pressure drugs. Damage is silent until late, so a blood and urine test is worth more than how you feel.
